How do you check your organization in Google AI Overviews?

A 20-minute manual check any communicator can run — no paid tools — plus an interactive readiness checker that scores your site and tells you exactly what to fix first.

Quick answer

How do you check if your organization appears in Google AI Overviews?

Search five to ten questions your audience actually asks — in a regular Google search — and record two things for each: whether an AI Overview appears, and whether your website is among its cited sources. Then search your organization's name and check the description for accuracy. No paid tool is required for an organization-level check.

Results vary by location and account, so treat any single check as a snapshot. The checker below turns your findings into a readiness score with specific next steps.

Step 1: run the five test searches

Do this part first — the checker below asks about what you find.

  1. 1

Write five questions your audience actually asks

Full questions, not keywords — the way someone would ask a person. A county library might use "what's happening at the library this weekend" and "how do I get a library card without ID." A food bank might use "who qualifies for food assistance in [county]." Include at least one question where your organization should be the answer.

  2. 2

Search each one and record what appears

For each search, note: did an AI Overview appear at the top? If so, click "Show more" and check the cited sources — is your site among them? Is a competitor or a directory answering instead of you? A simple two-column note ("Overview? / Cited?") is all you need.

  3. 3

    Search your organization's name

Finally, search your organization by name and read whatever summary Google produces. Is the description accurate? Current leadership, correct services, right locations? An inaccurate branded summary is often the most urgent finding of the whole exercise.

Step 2: score your readiness

Answer the ten checks below. Your score and recommended next steps update as you go — nothing is submitted or stored.

Common questions

Do I need a paid tool to check Google AI Overviews?
No. For an organization-level check, manual searching is enough: search the questions your audience actually asks and record whether an Overview appears and whether your site is cited. Paid tracking tools become useful later, when you want to monitor many queries automatically over time.
Why don't AI Overviews appear for my searches?
AI Overviews appear mainly for informational, question-style searches, and Google shows them selectively. Results also vary by location, device, and whether you are signed in. If none appear, try rephrasing your tests as full questions — the way someone would ask a person, not type keywords.
Does ranking first in normal Google results guarantee a citation?
No. AI Overviews draw on pages Google considers useful for the specific question, and they frequently cite pages that rank below the top results. Clear, answer-first content that directly addresses the question matters alongside traditional ranking.
How often should I re-check?
Quarterly is a sensible rhythm for most organizations. AI Overviews change frequently, so a single check is a snapshot, not a verdict. Keep the same five test questions each time so your results are comparable, and add new questions as your programs or services change.
