SEOs report PDFs dropping out of Google results

Practitioners are seeing PDF clicks fall sharply in Search Console, with HTML pages showing instead.

What happened?

Search Engine Roundtable reported on August 25, 2026 that several SEO practitioners are seeing PDF files fall out of Google search results. Savanna Gray of Amsive first flagged sharp drops in PDF clicks in Search Console, and her colleague Lily Ray shared the observation, saying the files look like they are dropping out of the index. Daniel Deceuster of Zion HealthShare reported his top PDF went to zero impressions starting August 18 and a second one on August 12. Government forms, including IRS and New York State documents, were the examples cited. Google has not announced a change.

Why does it matter?

Small organizations lean on PDFs more than most: application forms, annual reports, fact sheets, board minutes, program guidelines. Government agencies and associations often publish the authoritative version of a document only as a PDF. If those files surface less often, the content itself does not disappear, but the door people used to walk through does. In the examples reported, HTML pages and third party sites appeared in place of the original PDFs, which quietly rewards organizations that maintain a web page version of the same information.

Should I do anything?

Open Search Console, filter your pages by the string .pdf, and compare the last two weeks against the two weeks before. That takes about five minutes and tells you whether this is happening to you or not. If one PDF carries real weight, and for most small teams there is one, publish the same information as a plain HTML page with a clear heading and the key facts in text, then link the PDF from it as the download. Leave the rest of your library alone for now.
