Study: AI engines cite trade media far more than mainstream news

A study of 129 million AI citations reports that niche and trade outlets get cited well ahead of mainstream press.

What happened?

Otterly.ai and Press Ranger published a study on 20 August that matched 129.3 million AI citations collected in June against a database of 91 confirmed licensing deals between AI companies and publishers. They report that pages from publishers with an OpenAI deal collected 10.2 citations each on ChatGPT against 6.9 for unlicensed news publishers, a gap of 48 percent. No other platform showed the same effect. They also report that news and media content accounts for 7.2 percent of all citations, and that niche and trade outlets collect 213 percent more citations than mainstream media.

Why does it matter?

You cannot sign a licensing deal, so the useful finding here is the second one. If trade and niche outlets are cited well ahead of mainstream press, then the coverage that helps an AI engine learn your name is the coverage you can realistically earn: your sector newsletter, your association magazine, the regional outlet that already covers your field. Note the limits before you act on it. This is vendor research, both companies sell services that benefit from the conclusion, and the authors state that their findings describe association rather than causation.

Should I do anything?

List the three publications your sector actually reads, the small ones rather than the national press. Pick one and send a single specific pitch: a number you hold that nobody else has, a short explainer on something you know well, or a comment on a change your field is facing. One placement in an outlet that covers your niche is worth more here than a mention nobody in your category reads. Do not build a media plan yet. Send one email.
