Claude will watermark the text and files it generates
An EU transparency commitment that applies worldwide, and that will mark content Claude only edited.
What happened?
Anthropic published a help article explaining how Claude will mark AI-generated content. Anthropic has signed the EU AI Act Article 50(2) Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content. Claude models launched on or after August 2, 2026 will weave an imperceptible watermark into generated text, and supported generated files such as .svg, .png, and .jpg will carry signed provenance metadata using the C2PA standard. Anthropic says marking applies wherever Claude is offered, worldwide, and that models released before that date are in a transition period while marking support is added.
Why does it matter?
The important detail for a communications team is what the mark actually means. Anthropic says a detected mark signals that content was processed by Claude, not that Claude authored it. If you paste your own paragraph in for tightening, translation, or a summary, the output can carry a mark even though every idea is yours. The watermark travels with copied text and may survive some editing. This is an EU obligation, but Anthropic is applying it globally, so it reaches you regardless of where your organization sits.
Should I do anything?
Start a provenance note for your single most important page. In one or two lines, record who wrote the draft, what any AI tool was used for, and who reviewed and approved it before publishing. That record is what lets you answer a funder, board member, or reporter who asks whether a page was AI-generated. Do not try to strip or defeat marks, and do not overhaul your whole content process. One page, one note, and a habit of human review on anything published under your name.
