Google makes source links in AI answers more visible

Inline citations and hover previews are making the sources inside AI answers easier to see and click.

What happened?

Google announced five changes to how AI Overviews and AI Mode link to the websites behind their answers. More source links now appear inline, directly next to the text they support, instead of only in a panel at the end. On desktop, hovering over an inline link shows a preview with the site name and page title. Responses also now end with suggested articles for deeper reading, highlight links from publications a reader subscribes to, and add creator and community names to links from forums and social platforms.

Why does it matter?

Every change points the same direction: Google is making the sources inside AI answers easier to notice and easier to click. For a small organization, that raises the value of being cited. An inline link sitting next to the exact sentence you supplied is far more visible than a footnote in a side panel. The hover preview also means your site name and page title now appear before anyone clicks, so those few words become a first impression that either earns the visit or loses it.

Should I do anything?

Run one search on a desktop computer for the question your most important page answers, and hover over the links in the AI answer. If your page is cited, look at what the preview shows: the site name and page title are doing the selling now. If your title is vague, rewrite it to say plainly what the page offers and who it serves. Start with that single page and leave the rest of the site for later.
