Report: AI Overviews now appear on 43 percent of Google searches
New Similarweb data says AI Overviews show on 43 percent of searches, up from 15 percent a year ago.
What happened?
Market intelligence firm Similarweb published its 2026 generative AI report, and TechCrunch summarized the findings on July 27. According to those figures, Google AI Overviews appeared in 43 percent of searches, up from 15 percent a year earlier. Visits to Google AI Mode rose from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million by May 2026. Similarweb also reported that the average length of a Google search has grown, which it reads as people typing longer conversational questions instead of short keyword strings.
Why does it matter?
Close to half of Google searches now open with a generated answer rather than a list of links. For a small organization that changes what visibility means. Ranking on page one still helps, but being quoted inside the summary is what a reader actually sees. The same report found that only 6.8 percent of United States ChatGPT desktop queries returned citations as of May 2026, so being named is still uncommon. Longer conversational queries also mean your pages need to answer whole questions, not match keywords.
Should I do anything?
Take your single most important page and search Google for the question it should answer, worded the way a person would say it out loud. See whether an AI Overview appears and who gets cited inside it. If an Overview shows up and you are not in it, that is your starting point. Rewrite the opening of that one page so it answers the question in the first two sentences, under a heading phrased as the question itself. One page, one afternoon, nothing else.
